AstraZeneca and its European rival GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the world's biggest drugmaker, have agreed to co- "purchase" the blockbuster heartburn drug Nexium to help pay for its US launch in the US.
Eli Lilly's pharmaceutical sales force, based in Indianapolis, reported $11.2 billion in total sales of the drug in 2012.
The US sales volume was $6.5 billion in 2012 and is expected to be $12.5 billion by 2013, Lilly said.
"This agreement is a major victory for the company. We are very pleased to be able to launch the brand-name drug in the US at a much higher price," said Les Funtleyder, chief executive officer of GSK.
Lilly said the agreement will enable GSK to "purchase all of our products" at competitive prices.
"We believe that we can deliver a truly significant amount of revenue for the company," said Les Funtleyder, general manager of GSK. "The company is very proud to be in the US market."
Nexium's US patent on the drug expires in 2012 and will require a generic version of the drug to be available by 2013.
GSK, whose marketing and sales division focuses on branded drugs, said its sales of Nexium are expected to grow from $5.5 billion in 2012 to $6.5 billion by 2013.
The drug company also said it would be offering a "purchase option" for patients who need the medication on a "patient managed care plan" with a high deductible.
GSK said it is also in talks about a deal with AstraZeneca to acquire GSK and buy the rights to Nexium from AstraZeneca in the US market.
"We are very pleased to be able to acquire AstraZeneca and the US market," said Les Funtleyder, chief executive officer of GSK.
Lilly said the deal, which is expected to close in the second half of 2013, will allow the company to sell all of its global pharmaceuticals at a "fair value," which is a percentage of the company's sales.
"We believe that we can be a significant player in the global pharmaceuticals market," Funtleyder said.
The US market is expected to grow from $1.3 billion in 2012 to $2.4 billion by 2013, according to research firm IMS Health.
AstraZeneca, which has $10.8 billion in US stock, is expected to own the majority of the US sales force, though it will have to buy a controlling stake in AstraZeneca in the next year.
